The most airtight defense of democracy-by-lottery is the behavior of our elected representatives. All theoretical arguments against putting everyday people in the legislature wither in the face of the dumpster fire that is the United States Congress, let alone state assemblies. Last week’s shit show, in which fascist Republicans in the House held the country hostage in order to extract ten pounds of flesh from Kevin McCarthy before making him Speaker, was the latest confirmation (as if we needed any) that American electoral politics is nothing but a circus maximus.
